Current level of conditioning and endurance activities:

I ran Bloomsday for the 29th time this May, which is a 7.46 mile run,  in 53 minutes 57 seconds, placing third out of 488 in my age group and 801 out of 43,640 overall.  My pace was 7 minutes 14 seconds/mile.

July 2008 I climbed the D.C. route on Mt. Rainier from Paradise to the summit rim in 7 hours 30 minutes, carrying a 30 pound pack.

January 10, 2008, after 6 days of acclimatization, I climbed Mt. Chimborazo in Ecuador from the upper refuge at 16,400 feet to the top summit at 20,700 feet in 6 hours 40 minutes.

October 2008 I hiked up Mailbox Peak in the North Cascades 2.9 miles with 4,000 ft. elevation gain in 1 hour 30 minutes.

August 2007 I ran 7 miles from our cabin on Lake Pend Oreille at 2,062 feet to the top of Pack Saddle Peak at 6,402 feet in 2 hours 6 minutes.

I have run over a dozen marathons, a dozen Half Ironman Triathlons, a 34.4 mile ultra-marathon and a 100 K Ultra marathon.

In my years in the mountains I’ve been no stranger to harsh weather conditions.  In February 1996, after summiting Mt. Rainier, I was caught in a storm and spent the night below Anvil Rock with no shelter with the temperature below 0 degrees and winds of 60 to 90 miles per hour.  The next day I was the only person on the mountain because the park had been closed due to the storm.  On my Mt. Olive climb, the high temperature was -16 degrees with a low temperature of -35 degrees.

My first winter attempt to climb Mt. Columbia, my partner and I were camped on the Columbia Icefield below Snow Dome and an arctic front moved in with -25 degree temp and 40-50 mile per hour winds and fog.

Training and conditioning:

For the past 20 years my routine has been to run 8 miles 3 times per week, work out with weights 45 minutes, 2 times per week, and swim 30 minutes 2 times per week.  Plus, I walk 15 miles plus each week for work.  Weekends are spent climbing, hiking, ski mountaineering, snowshoeing, waterskiing and scuba diving.
